Chapter Twenty-One
Win
“Bassir’s been careful, Win,” Nathan said. “But I’ve got his phone located and his flight plans. It seems he’s staying put for the moment.”
“Where?”
“Tucson, Arizona.”
“What the hell game is he playing?”
Nathan pulled up another page. “These are his Internet searches since he got there. My guess, for what it’s worth, he’s putting the story together. Getting documentation or verification.”
“In other words, going on about his business.” I started pacing. “I wonder if he knows his mother’s dead?”
“Doubt it. I got his phone number through a call to his sister a few hours after he landed at LAX. Kemat was alive then.”
“He didn’t contact them again? Or try to get in touch with Kemat?”
“No phone calls, just Internet searches.”
I stopped. “Could someone else find his number? Trace him?”
“No. I deleted the record of his call to his family right after I found it.”
“Good work, Nathan. Really good. If Bill could recruit you, he would.”
“Hmpf.” He swiveled his chair around to face me. “Any way to contact Bassir? Warn him to stay put?”
“And tell him about his mother?” I sat on the arm of his couch. “He doesn’t know me from Adam. Or Eve. Doesn’t know his mother asked me to look for him. Any message I send him could be viewed as a trick. Might panic him into moving where Shamsi could find him. Let me think about it. In the meantime, monitor him. Let me know if he contacts anyone. Or starts to move.”
“Are you going to let Bill know?”
“I don’t know. I should. Bill could send agents to pick him up, provide protective custody.”
“But?”
“We don’t know where the eyes are—the guys who’d let Shamsi know if agents left for a pick-up.”
“Get the duty roster at Atterbury, and I’ll cross-check everyone against the numbers Shamsi’s been using. Or should I just ask Bill?”
“Let me swing by and ask.” I sure as hell wasn’t making many decisions. I could see the question “Why not?” in Nathan’s eyes. Because I felt Kemat had entrusted her son to my safekeeping. I didn’t want to fail her. It was her last request of me. “Okay, go ahead and hack the base—civilian employees first. Do your cross-checking thing. If you don’t come up with the eyes by tomorrow, I’ll pick up Bassir myself.”
He stared at me with his dark eyes. “Isn’t that taking unnecessary risk?”
“I’ll be careful. I have Sarah to come home to. But this is something I have to do. For Kemat.” I gave him my burn phone number and asked him to track my location. He set up a “panic” app, the number seven plus pound sign that would alert him and the nearest cops if trouble appeared.
I called Bill on the way home. The three stooges were staying put. No contact with Shamsi. Everybody was waiting for the mouse to appear so the cats could tear him apart.
